Und manchen sieht man es sogar an - ein bisschen. Eine ungewöhnliche Portraitserie gibt Einblicke in das Innenleben von großen Namen aus der Welt des Rock und Pop vor und nach dem Konzert.

Als erstes fällt die Spannung in den Gesichtern links auf. In Gedanken stehen sie vielleicht schon da oben auf der Bühne vor ihren Tausenden von Fans. Viele von ihnen nutzen normalerweise diese letzten paar Sekunden vor dem Gig, um sich zu sammeln. Manche, wie der Grime-Rapper Tinie Tempah, scheinen zu beten oder zu meditieren. In diesem Augenblick werden selbst die großen Stars wieder zu Menschen wie du und ich.

Jessie J, die Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Beth Ditto, Snoop Dogg  - für die Hilfsorganisation War Child machten einige der größten Namen aus der Welt des Pop und Rock kurz Station im mobilen Studio des Fotografen Tom Oldham, der sich seit fünf Jahren gleich neben der Bühne platziert, um diesen intimen letzten Augenblick vor dem großen Auftritt festzuhalten. Am Ende des Gigs kommen sie wieder, fertig und verschwitzt, aber erleichtert und meistens euphorisch.

Für beide Portraits braucht Oldham jeweils nur Sekunden, denn genau so sollten die Bilder sein: authentische Momentaufnahmen, die uns etwas über die Stars erzählen, das die üblichen, sorgfältig gestylten und posierten offiziellen Portraits nicht preisgeben.

"ON/OFF" nannte Oldham sein Projekt. Auch er fotografiert Bands und Solo-Artists im Auftrag ihrer Manager und Musiklabel. Aber diese andere Seite, dieser Moment, den die Fans nie sehen, das hatte ihn immer fasziniert.  "Es ging mir darum, Live-Musik und Portraits in einem Projekt zu verbinden", sagt Oldham. "Ich wollte diese Energie zeigen, die in einem Gig die Künstler verwandelt." Dass dieses Projekt nun Geld für War Child verdient, erleichterte ihm nicht nur den Zugang zu manchen Künstlern, sondern erfüllte ihm auch den Wunsch, eine Organisation zu unterstützen, die ihm sehr am Herzen liegt: "War Child ist die anerkannteste Hilfsorganisation, die mit der Musikindustrie arbeitet. Es war logisch, dieses Projekt mit ihnen zu machen, gerade jetzt. Kaum ein Jahr in der jüngeren Vergangenheit war chaotischer und destruktiver als 2014. Deshalb ist es eine fantastische Chance, auf diese Weise zu helfen - für mich und für jeden, der das Buch kauft."

Stars get nerves too

It's the tension in their faces that's noticeable right away. Perhaps in their minds they're already up there on stage in front of their thousands of fans. Many use these last moments before the gig to collect themselves and to focus. Some meditate, others, like Tinie Tempah, even look as if they are praying. This is the moment that turns even the biggest stars back into people like you and me.

Jessie J, the Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Beth Ditto, Snoop Dogg  - some of the biggest names of Pop and Rock have had their portrait taken at the portable  studio that Tom Oldham has set up right by the big stage they're about to enter. For five years he has been photographing them in these intimate few seconds, all in aid of the charity War Child. After the gig they return, exhausted and sweating but relieved and often downright euphoric.

Each portrait takes Oldham only seconds because the very point of the poject is to authentically capture this moment that tells us something about the star that the usual, carefully styled and posed official PR photos don't reveal.

Initially I was set up to shoot Vampire Weekend who Janelle was supporting, but she was willing to be shot for this and look at the results! She's so incredible and apparently keeps her tension prior to the show by not using the bathroom! Beautiful and amazing, a revelation."

Usually, Tom Oldham takes those official images too, the ones you see on sleeve covers and in glossy magazines. But this other side, this unique moment that the fans don't usually see, was what always fascinated him. And thus the project "ON/OFF" was born. "I wanted to capture a live music project that tied in portraiture, to really show the energy exchange that occurs around a performance." The fact that this project now generates donations for War Child probably eased the access to the artists, but more importantly it enabled Oldham to support a cause that's very close to his heart: "War Child is the most respected charity working with the music industry and it was completely logical to try to support their work with this kind of project. Especially now - I can't remember a more chaotic and destructive time in recent world history than 2014. So to have the opportunity to contribute in this way means a great deal to me and I'm sure everyone who buys the book."
